Tending What Matters- Country Living Connoisseur (March 26)

Pull Up a Chair

I walked into the greenhouse the other morning, and the tulips had opened.

The pink ones all at once, like they couldn’t wait any longer.

And now these ruffly, peachy ones are coming on—just stunning.

They’re showing off a little… and honestly, they’re about the only thing that is right now.

Everything else is still in progress.

Trays of seedlings are just getting started.

Beds I’ve been filling and working through.

A lot of time is spent on things that don’t look like much yet.

The tulips feel like the moment. But they’re the exception, not the rule.

Most of what’s happening right now is quiet.

And it’s easy to forget that this part matters too—when what you’re doing doesn’t look like much compared to the one thing that’s in full bloom.

But the bloom is built on all of that unseen work.

That’s the season I’m in right now.

Doing the work that doesn’t get noticed yet.

And trusting it’s leading somewhere good.

With love,
Lane + Jules

From the Farm Kitchen

Simple things that make a table feel special

There’s a jar of sweet pickled onions in my fridge right now, and I’ve been reaching for it all week.

It’s one of those simple things—just a few ingredients, takes hardly any time—but it adds something special to your table.

A little on a salad. Tucked into a sandwich. Alongside whatever you’re making for dinner.

It doesn’t take much, but you notice it. I think that’s why I love recipes like this. The older, simple ones… they didn’t try to do too much. They just worked.

Somewhere along the way, we’ve made cooking feel more complicated than it needs to be.

But it doesn’t have to be. A few good ingredients, put together well, can be more than enough.

I shared the full recipe on the blog if you want to make a jar and keep it in your fridge this week.

Out in the Garden

Setting Yourself Up for Success

This time of year, I’m not rushing to get everything planted.

I’m getting things ready.

I’ve been filling beds, adding soil where it’s needed, and making sure everything has a good foundation before anything goes in. It’s not the exciting part, but it makes a difference later.

If you’re working on your beds right now, this is a good time to top them off with fresh soil or compost and loosen things up a bit. You don’t have to overthink it—just give your plants something good to grow into.

I’m also mixing my potting soil and starting seeds both inside and out in the greenhouse. I like having both going, so I’m not relying on just one setup if the weather shifts.

If you’re starting seeds, make sure they’re getting plenty of light early on. That’s the biggest thing that keeps them from getting tall and leggy. And don’t overwater—damp is good, soggy is not.

If you’re feeling behind, you’re not.

This is the part where you set yourself up.

You don’t need to do everything at once. Just take the next step that moves things forward.

Designing a Flourishing Life

You can't tend everything!

Every year in the garden, there are things I don’t plant.

Not because I don’t like them. Because I can’t grow everything!

There’s only so much space, time, and energy to go around.

What I choose to plant gets my attention.

What I take care of grows.

The rest… doesn’t.

It’s not that different in life.

It’s easy to try to keep everything going—every commitment, every idea, every responsibility.

But when everything gets your attention, nothing really has room to thrive.

A flourishing life comes from choosing what matters and giving it your time and care.

Not everything has to grow right now.

Tuck it in Your Pocket

Pull Up a Chair London mornings feel different. The light moves across old book spines, painted ceilings, walls of yarn, and rows of pigments that look like they belong on an artist’s palette. Bread is stacked proudly behind glass. Umbrellas drift overhead. Mosaic tiles tell their stories piece by piece. Even the markets feel thoughtfully arranged. This city doesn’t whisper its creativity. It shows it. We’ve been here teaching a course to UT Knoxville honors students focused on Human Centered...

Pull Up a Chair Next week, we head to London. Rock and Sole Plaice Fish & Chips (London, UK - Established 1871) It’s something we do each year, yet it always feels both familiar and new. There’s the excitement — a city rich with history, long walks, good meals, and conversations that linger. And then there’s the weight of leaving. Our farm. Our animals. Our routines. Our heart. And the people who fill it — our kids, grandbabies, friends, and the everyday closeness that makes stepping away...

Pull Up a Chair Right now at Sweet Bombdiggity Farms, it doesn’t look like much is happening. The beds are mostly bare. The greenhouse feels still. If you didn’t know better, you might think we’re in a pause. But this is one of my favorite parts of the year. This is when the real work is tucked out of sight. Seed packets are opened. Rows are measured. Notes are scribbled in the margins of old notebooks. We’re walking the beds, deciding what goes where, and quietly setting the stage for...
