Here's what I keep coming back to: you can't care for every hydrangea the same way. Some bloom from what they grew last year — old wood, deep roots, time already invested. You protect that. You don't cut it back just because someone told you spring is for pruning. Others bloom on brand new growth, and holding onto last year's stems is exactly what's keeping them from...
Pull Up a Chair Y'all, this summer has been something else. We are up before the heat breaks, feeding animals, filling waters, hauling, mowing, weed-eating, and coming in with mud on our boots and sweat on everything else. Finding good help out here has been a real challenge, and we cannot wait for you to meet Jess. She has been such a gift to this farm, and we are so glad she's here. It still takes all of us to get through a day, but having the right people alongside you changes everything....

We spent this week doing what you do in a heat wave like this — extra water, shade cloth, mulch piled high, checking on things twice a day instead of once. And somewhere around the third trip out to the garden, it hit me: the plants that make it through weeks like this aren't the ones that never struggle.
