The Quiet Between Seasons

The Quiet Between Seasons

This time of year feels like the world is changing gears. The mornings start later, the days end earlier, and there’s a quiet hum of readiness in the air. Out on the farm, we’ve been buttoning things up for winter, but the truth is, most of us feel some version of this shift, whether we live in the city, the suburbs, or out where the fields meet the trees.

There’s work to be done, both literal and emotional, before the new season settles in. Closets get cleared, projects wrapped, hearts re-centered. It’s not about rushing but about readying ourselves. The quiet between seasons is where we prepare ourselves, not just our spaces, for what’s next.

Let’s dream it, design it, and live it—together.

With love,
Lane + Jules

Designing a Life You Love

The Seasonal Swap

Transitions have a way of reminding us that change doesn’t have to be dramatic. Designing a life you love means noticing what’s ready for a refresh and giving it the care it deserves. This season, that might mean clearing a space, closing a chapter, or creating something new that makes daily life feel a little lighter.

This week’s activity: Try a “Seasonal Swap.”
Choose one space, habit, or system that feels stuck in the last season, and give it a simple refresh. Maybe it’s switching your summer throws for cozy wool, rearranging your kitchen shelves, clearing digital clutter, or creating a new playlist that fits the rhythm of cooler days. It doesn’t need to be big, just one small shift that signals change and helps you feel more aligned with where you are now.

Small updates like these help us ease into the new season with purpose.

From the Farm Kitchen

Maple Mustard Pork Tenderloin

When life feels full of preparation, I like a meal that feels special but doesn’t take all day. Pork tenderloin is one of those recipes that looks impressive, tastes rich, and still leaves room for everything else you’re juggling this time of year. It’s tender, flavorful, and easy to pair with roasted vegetables or a simple salad.

Out in the Garden

Cool Season Flowers

I spent the past week tearing out the last of what remained in the greenhouse, clearing the spent vines, and feeding the soil with what it’s earned. There’s something deeply satisfying about returning the goodness to the ground. The garden, even bare, feels alive in its own way.

I’ve planted a few cold-hardy seeds because I love the promise of early blooms once the light returns. I also love seeing the garden as a blank canvas again. It’s peaceful in its simplicity, full of both endings and beginnings. Every empty bed holds a little space for imagination.

If you’re planning ahead, this is the time to plant for early color and texture. Cool-season flowers don’t just survive the chill; they thrive in it.

I've created a simple Cool-Season Flowers Field Guide for you! There may even be a little time to make these happen if you hustle, or maybe you can save it and plan ahead for next season. Cool-season flowers prove that there’s always something growing, even when it feels like everything else has stopped.

The Curated Corner

The "Pink Room"

At the Knoxville Nest, I’ve been pulling together the softest kind of cozy in what’s become my "pink room" — the one that feels calm and lived in, like it’s been waiting for me to finish its story. The bed is dressed in vintage fuzzy chenille spreads and old quilts with edges that tell their own history. The pillowcases are the kind that have been washed enough times to feel like kindness.

The headboard is my favorite part. It is a hand-painted piece that once belonged to a couple who lived to be 100. It was their “wedding bed,” and they slept in it for their entire marriage. They believed a double bed was just right, and maybe they were onto something. These days, even a king can feel crowded. There’s something beautiful about that thought — that contentment doesn’t always need more space, just the right kind of closeness.

I love the idea that everything we surround ourselves with —from the stories and textures to the unique pieces we choose —can fill a room with memory and meaning.

Favorite Finds

Taking Off the Chill

Lane and I ordered this little gem to heat our Florida Room at the Knoxville Nest, since that space is all windows and always the first to get chilly. This thing has blown me away. It is whisper quiet and warms the room so evenly that you barely notice it’s working — except for how cozy it feels. It’s compact, sleek, and doesn’t distract from the space. It also doesn't get hot to the touch, which makes it so much safer! I cannot wait to see how it performs this summer as a cooler, but for winter warmth, it’s already a winner. Definitely one of my favorite finds this month.

What Skincare Do You Use?

I get asked about my skin all the time, and honestly, my routine could not be simpler. This pure squalane is the one thing I won’t skip. Our bodies naturally make squalane, but we lose it as we age, which is precisely why this has been such a game-changer for me. It keeps my skin soft, healthy, and hydrated without any fuss. I use it morning and evening, and I have tried several varieties, but this one is plant-based, and I like it best.

Pull Up a Chair Pull up a chair — we’re writing this one with sand between our toes. This week, our whole family descended on St. Augustine, Florida. Kids, grandkids, all of us under one roof with the Atlantic out the back door. It’s loud and full and a little chaotic and we wouldn’t trade a single minute of it. There’s something about stepping away from the ordinary that makes you see it differently. The farm will be there when we get home. The garden will keep doing what gardens do. But...

Pull Up a Chair There is something deeply satisfying about choosing the right thing on purpose. Not the prettiest seed packet. Not the one that looked most impressive on the shelf. The one that actually fits your space, your soil, your life. That's what we've been up to in the garden lately. Cucumbers that stay compact instead of taking over everything in a five-foot radius. Carrots are tucked into rows by dropping them into corn starch, so you can actually see where you are planting them!...

Ripening tomatoes on the vine in a garden

Pull Up a Chair Lane and I got our tomatoes in the ground a couple of weeks early this year. Right around Mother’s Day is the “safe” date here in East Tennessee — but we took our chances. The semester is winding down at the university, the rescue animals need their daily love and care, the grass is growing faster than we can keep up with, the weeds have opinions about that too, and gardening season is here in full force. It is a lot all at once. And we wouldn’t trade it. But here’s what’s...
